The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research was established in 1901. It was the first institution in the United States devoted solely to bio-medical research. James Shannon was on the faculty of the New York University College of Medicine from 1929-46. In 1946 he joined the National Institutes of Health, where he was the director from 1955-68.
